An open meeting to the community to gather thoughts and ideas about allowing mountain biking at Newtown Battlefield State Park was held Thursday Sept. 23. The meeting was hosted by Andy Patros, Chemung County Legislator - 15th District and the Finger Lakes Mountain Bike Club. Everyone in attendance agreed that converting the hiking trails into multi-use trails to accommodate mountain biking will increase attendance at the park thus contributing to the longevity of the park. We found that we have more than enough volunteers for monthly trail maintenance days..Newtown Battlefield State Park is the only State Park we have in Chemung County. The attendance is down drastically this year. Loaded with history, it would be a shame to see it close like so many other things in life that fade away because of little interest. We really don't miss them until they're gone. At that point we say, " I wish I did something to save it." but it's too late. The true fact is there is a huge interest in Newtown Battlefield State Park allowing cycling on its trails. Opening Newtown Battlefield State Park to mountain biking would generate new life in the park and open new off road cycling opportunities in Chemung County. There are countless families looking for these opportunities to bike on trails due to fear of cycling on the roads. Too many times the FLMBC and our local bike shops have had to send out of town inquiring people out of the county for trail riding due to lack of trails in our home town. This adds up to lost revenue for our local businesses. The Park is located half way between Binghamton, NY and Ithaca, NY. Both have a huge mountain bike community. Route 86 will be finished soon and A new bike trail along Rt. 86 will pass right by the park in the near future, all of which will compliment the park. We have the volunteers consisting of experienced trail builders and A National Mountain Bike Patrol Group. all equipped with the knowledge and tools to maintain and enhance the trails at the park to encourage more usage by everyone. Shared use trails is the way to go at Newtown Battlefield and could help increase revenue by filling camping spots at the park as well as the possibility of signature events in the future. Local government (The City of Elmira & The Chemung Chamber of Commerce) and the entire cycling community as well as many local hikers ( that realize that properly designed trails are sustainable) and that studies have shown that cycling causes less impact than foot traffic are behind us 100 percent. This will cost the state absolutely no money as we are prepared to raise money for signage and other amenities for the park. We are willing to work with the state closely as to their specifications for improvements. We all realize the Park at this point does not have much to offer as far as family entertainment, (no swimming or waterfront deters people). Cycling on the trails at Newtown Battlefield State Park makes sense. Anyone interested in seeing this happen should join us in this effort.
